Whether you’re a big fish in your local pond or well-known throughout the country, it’s important to keep your feet on the ground. Success is heady and easily can cause you to feel omnipotent and above it all. But these feelings can fuel missteps and misjudgments that will lead you to fall, so rein them in.
- Don’t Believe the Hype
As you become more successful, it’s easy to begin to believe your own PR and puffery. Flattering things are said and done to promote your career, but recognize this for what it is – hype. Get an ongoing reality check. Keep people in your Success Entourage who will “tell it like it is,” not just swell your head with praise, plaudits, and what you want to hear.
- Don’t Take Just Because You Can
High profilers receive offers for all kinds of things, including generous favors and acquiescences from “groupies” who are just glad to be in your presence. Sure, you can take advantage of them because they’re throwing themselves at you, but this doesn’t mean you should. When you start feeling “entitled” to enjoy all the goodies of success, your Success Entourage is asleep at the switch and needs to give you a good talking to. Don’t make your legacy a trail of exploited and victimized admirers. That’s no mark of success.
- Show Appreciation
You didn’t get where you are on your own, so say “Thanks!” to those who have helped you along the way. This doesn’t have to be a big deal. Sometimes it’s as simple as returning calls to folks who are no longer in your social circles but whom you used to know. Sometimes these are people who helped you back in the day, but often they’re just those who will get a big thrill from receiving contact from you. And if you want to do something really special – invite them to join you at an event. You’ll be doing something very kind for them and you’ll feel good about it too! Success gives you a big ego boost and you deserve to enjoy the high times. But keep it real. You’ll soar farther and longer by keeping your feet on the ground.
