Valentine’s Day is a time of joy for many, but can stir up great angst for others. If you‘re stuck in an inattentive relationship or are settling for less in casual dating, vow to expect more for yourself this year.

  • Speak Up

If you get neglected year after year on Valentine’s Day or other special occasions, say something about it. It’s okay to expect a gift or special show of affection at these times, so stop stewing in silence and make your feelings known. Even on the tightest budget, it’s possible for couples to share small tokens of affection. But no one can read your mind. Tell your mate what you like and how the day can be made special for you.

  • Treat Yourself

When your words keep falling on deaf ears, it’s time to make the day special for yourself. This is especially important for singles whose dating relationships may not be firmly established. Get together with friends, make plans that you all can enjoy and that enable you to embrace the spirit of the day. And, while that special gift would feel better coming from one who’s expressing their love or fondness for you – don’t sweat it – get it for yourself!

  • Re-evaluate Your Relationship

If time and time again you have to nag about being treated special or have to keep doing it all for yourself, it’s time to take a hard look at why you’re still in this relationship. You deserve a partner who is attentive and responsive to your needs, and who truly understands the reciprocal nature of expressing appreciation for the joy you bring to each other’s lives. This doesn’t mean they have to give you everything you want, but it does mean putting in the extra time and effort now and then to do the little extras that make you feel adored.

Notwithstanding all the hype and materialism surrounding Valentine’s Day, it’s a great time for you and your mate to celebrate each other. Don’t accept short shrift. Expect the “sweetheart” treatment you deserve!
